Work Logging App

Over the summer I worked on a small but useful app that can be used to log your work hours. It is quite useful for someone who is self employed or hasn't any other method of generating a work report. I created this using Google Apps scripting API. I found it to be quite easy to use and could allow very handy Apps to be created and used on Google Docs.

The idea is that a person could log their work on a single spreadsheet using a simple form, then generate a monthly report on the work they carried out. The initial page you must create is this.

You can easily see the fields that will be filled here, also notice the Timesheet button in the menu toolbar. This contains two options, Log Work and Generate Report. If you look at the bottom you can see a "projects" tab.

This projects tab simply contains a list of currently underway projects. These projects will then be easily selectable in a drop-down list on the Log Work form. This is what the Log work form looks like. It is displayed automatically on opening the spreadsheet or when you select it in the Timesheet menu item.

When you click submit, the information is added to the log sheet like so...

There is no limit on the amount of entries each sheet can contain. The result of a few entries would look like this...

The next option available is Report Generation. This process runs when you select "Generate Report" from the Timesheet menu item. When you do, you are presented with the following form.

This simply generates a report based on the selected month/year.

Upon hitting submit you get a confirmation message explaining what the report was saved as into your Google Drive. It only accounts for billable objects. The report that is generated will contain no rate per hour, if you fill this in the total payment for the month will be generated.

This is what the report will look like!

To use this Google script, you'll need to select "Tools" from the menu and then "Script editor" and paste in the code, save it and then click the run option.

The code is available here: Work-Log.gs
